Defending against DDoS attacks.
« on: December 13, 2009, 12:11:26 AM »
The recent DDoS attacks leave every PTC owner scared it might happen to them. But what can you do to avoid it, and what should you do when it happens? Unless you have thousands of dollars to spend on protection from d-guard or blockdos, you just have to try and not make enemies.  ;)

Nowadays more and more hosts has some security against DDos. So before renting a host ask about DDos protection, there are also some scripts what you can run on your website during the attack, which make some protection. Also a good idea if you choose host which is specified for PTC sites and several big PTC hosted on them. Of course these hosts above not cost $4.00 monthly. :D

About enemies...some hackers did it for money, other black hats just for fun. Not mention that if your site become well known, and successfull I can garantee the there are a lot of jelous people will make steps against you.

Although please be aware of that there are MANY hosts who say that they have DDoS protection; this is often just a trick and many times they don't provide websites hosted on their servers DDoS protection.

I was wondering about the price blockdos.net ... $ 500 monthly + $ 500 setup fee, expensive ... for people just starting would not be a recommended option. It is necessary for beginners?  :-\

Of course not. Hackers attack big, succesful sites, not beginners.

Once sites get large it is necessary though. I'd say around 100,000 users.

It's not even that reliable. Often blocks good traffic.

And unless you buy 2 licenses (from what I understood from a rep on a forum), there can be errors involved vs traffic going to your site from a www. addy vs those coming in by just .com/.net whatever without the www.
